You’ve cut your shower time down by a minute and installed a low-flow shower-head. Of course you recycle and compost and never leave your cell phone charger plugged into the wall. Now, take the leap from eco-chores to eco-chic with these tips from top interior designers and The Early Show’s green living expert, Danny Seo.

RETHINK YOUR WALLS
Painting a wall has long been a designer’s trick for adding more oomph—without more clutter—to a room. Rachel Winokur, the founder of eTTa Designs, an eco-friendly interior design firm in Los Angeles, suggests putting down the paint brush and considering these green options instead.

Melville, New York, May 7, 2012 – Leviton today announced the launch of its Level 2 (240V, 40A) charging station. Designed, tested and assembled in the United States, the next generation Leviton charging station is able to provide 9.6 kW output, and will charge the Toyota RAV4 EV in approximately six hours. It also includes a 25-foot charging cable which offers flexibility in the mounting location.

The weatherproof, thermoplastic NEMA Type 4 enclosure makes the device safe for use in both indoor and outdoor locations. The unit comes standard with Leviton’s patent pending “cord-connected” system, which is ideal for indoor applications, with the capability to be converted to hard-wire for outdoor applications.

“Leviton has designed a next generation charging station that provides unique ergonomics and aesthetics at a leading price point for Toyota consumers,” said Michael Mattei, Vice President and General Manager for Leviton’s Commercial and Industrial Business Unit. “Through our relationship with Toyota, customers know the products they purchase are designed by two companies that value safety, quality and efficiency.”

LOS ANGELES - The U.S Environmental Protection Agency has entered into three settlements totaling $6,605,080 to help pay for groundwater cleanup at the South El Monte portion of the San Gabriel Valley Area 1 Superfund Site in Los Angeles, Calif. Since EPA began cleaning up this site in 2008, approximately 4,600 pounds of contaminants have been removed from the groundwater.

EPA has recovered a total of $25 million for the South El Monte cleanup, with the latest $6.6 million to pay for extraction and treatment of groundwater polluted with industrial solvents such as TCE (trichloroethylene) and PCE (perchloroethylene), a chemical once common in dry cleaning operations.

“EPA remains committed to pursuing parties responsible for environmental damage in the San Gabriel Valley,” said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. “So far, more than ten billion gallons of water have been treated to provide safe drinking water for the local communities.”

Modern prefab can be beautiful, but it is still too pricy for it to be a viable option for most homebuyers (and builders). But prefab innovators CONNECT:HOMES (www.connect-homes.com) are about to change the game, elevating prefab from a great design conversation to a realistic (and efficient) way of building homes.

Introducing CONNECT:HOMES (www.connect-homes.com), a Los Angeles-based prefab innovator that has just launched a new line of affordable, exportable, and sustainable modular homes. They ship like shipping containers, but are most definitely NOT shipping container homes.

Affordable because Connect:Homes has a patent-pending technology that allows them to build modules to 90% complete at the factory, surpassing industry standards that are typically closer to 50%. This reduces finish time and reducing construction costs considerably.

(May 9, 2012) - The Toyota Division’s strong April sales performance (160,493 units for 13.1 percent increase compared to April 2011) was helped in large part by the release of their latest hybrid products that created high levels of consumer demand.

Rising fuel prices at the pump, a generation of better performing hybrid vehicles, and an increased consumer acceptance of hybrid technology are all conditions that have helped propel the sales of Toyota hybrid vehicles.

The Prius Family vehicles (Prius, Prius v, Prius Plug-in and Prius c) accounted for a total sales volume of 25,168 for all four models. Notable among the Prius models is the sales pace of the subcompact Prius c. This new model which offers an EPA-rated 53 city mpg and a starting MSRP of $18,950 continued its rapid sales pace with 4,006 units sold in April, and a total of 8,901units sold during its first 49 days on the market (March 12, 2012 launch). At the current sales pace, the demand for the fuel-saving Prius Family models seems to be outpacing the company’s initial U.S. target of more than 220,000 this year.

In considering from the numerous choices for these top five slots, we take into account a number of variables, including investment in renewable energy, the ability to influence policy and shape public opinion, and advocacy efforts. This goes well beyond simply counting coin - it is about innovation, imagination, vision, risk and patience. Arguably, these people will play an important role in your life and leisure, for better or worse.

These are our picks:

Steven Chu - The China Link
Co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1997, US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu is one of the most distinguished faces of renewable energy in the world, tasked with helping the Obama Administration invest in clean energy, reduce dependence on foreign oil, address climate change concerns and create millions of jobs while doing it. Chu has devoted a large part of his scientific career to alternative energy solutions and climate change research, in part as former director of the DoE’s Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. While the last century saw him win the Nobel Prize, this century earned him R&D Magazine’s Scientist of the Year award for 2011. In announcing his appointment as Secretary of Energy, President Obama said that the “future of our economy and national security is inextricably linked to one challenge: energy [and] Steven has blazed new trails …”. Chu’s most tangible successes have been the government’s investment in geothermal and offshore wind projects.

The victory came when the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and the United States Army Corp of Engineers announced last week that they would be abandoning plans to extend the breakwater at Ma’alaea Harbor. The Surfrider Foundation and other groups have long opposed the project for fear that it would destroy large sections of coral reef and irreparably damage the nearby surf break. The break, also known as Freight Trains, is widely lauded as the world’s fastest wave.

The victory is a landmark win for the Surfrider Foundation, who first began their work to block the project in 1990.

“Even before there was a Maui Chapter, Surfrider Foundation campaigned to save the world-class wave at Ma’alaea,” says Stuart Coleman, Hawaii Coordinator for the Foundation.

Recycled Plastic Bottles will Build Raised Planting Beds for Urban Gardens in NYC Public Schools

(Bethesda, Md. – May 1, 2012) – Yesterday Honest Tea® kicked off a national recycling initiative called “The Great Recycle” in New York City. The event featuring a 30-foot tall recycling bin in Times Square was a huge success with New Yorkers recycling more than 15,000 empty plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers (~1,500 containers each hour). The plastic bottles collected are being recycled into plastic lumber, which GrowNYC will use to build urban gardens for NYC public schools as part of their Grow to Learn program. 5-Boro Green Services will responsibly recycle the other items donated at the event.

“We are thrilled with New York’s response to our invitation to keep the (re)cycle going,” said Seth Goldman, co-founder and TeaEO of Honest Tea. “While we captured one-third of the amount of bottles Honest Tea sells in a day in New York City, the scale of our effort illustrates how much more work communities need to do to boost national recycling rates above 30 percent, let alone our long-term goal of recapturing every bottle that we sell.”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is encouraging Americans to take action against asthma by learning more about the disease and how it affects their families and communities. Nearly 26 million Americans, including more than 7 million children, are affected by this chronic respiratory disease, including low income and minority populations at the highest rates.

“Asthma is a disease that touches the lives of American families every day. EPA is working hard to clean the air we breathe and reduce the environmental causes of asthma and other respiratory illnesses,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “As we mark Asthma Awareness Month, it’s important for parents and children to learn more about the disease and its triggers, so we can prevent asthma attacks and better protect our health and our children’s health.”

The annual economic cost of asthma, including direct medical costs from hospital stays and indirect costs such as lost school and work days, amount to approximately $56 billion. Through the Clean Air Act, EPA has helped prevent millions of asthma attacks across the country and continues to work alongside federal, state and local partners to address this nationwide problem. In 2010 alone, pollution prevention standards under the Clean Air Act lead to reductions in fine particle matter and ozone pollution that prevented more than 1.7 million incidences of asthma attacks. Recent standards, such as the 2011 Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, will further reduce air pollution and help prevent asthma attacks.

MERCED, Calif. — The University of California, Merced, recently earned what might be the most prestigious of a growing list of awards for its Long Range Development Plan, while the campus had its seventh building certified “Gold” by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

UC Merced’s commitment to LEED and sustainability can be seen throughout the campus. Their sustainability efforts are now quite impressive. They have eight buildings that are LEED certified silver or better. Plus, they have a goal to achieve zero net energy use, contribute zero waste to landfills and produce zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 — known as the Triple Zero Commitment.

“At UC Merced, we’re attempting to set new standards for energy efficiency and environmental stewardship in our building design and construction,” said Thomas Lollini, FAIA, campus architect and associate vice chancellor for Principal Planning, Design and Construction. “These latest achievements show that we are on our way toward not just meeting those standards, but exceeding them.”

The first Green Festival to take place in NYC was a huge marketplace of green ideas and products, attended by 25,000 people this earth day weekend at the Javits Center. At first I was somewhat surprised to see that Ford was a sponsor of a Green Festival, knowing that Green America had vetted each vendor carefully for its green credentials. However, my viewpoint was changed after seeing exhibit at the Festival, and learning about the efforts now going into the making of the Ford fleet.
