June 06, 2013 - Nürburg/Affalterbach

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive circled the Nürburgring Nordschleife (“north loop”) in a record time of 7:56.234 minutes. Therefore, the electric AMG super sports car is at the same time the first electrically-powered series production vehicle, which masters the legendary race track in under eight minutes. The record time of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive was notarially certified. Two weeks after the first overall win for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in the 24 Hours Nürburgring, a further member of the SLS AMG family impressively demonstrates its potential on the most difficult race track worldwide.

“Exposure to PCBs is a concern whenever facilities are handling materials containing these toxic chemicals,” said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. “Our goal is to safeguard worker health and nearby communities by ensuring that Lighting Resources takes the necessary steps to improve the safety of their recycling and disposal practices.”

The facility is permitted under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to manage and store PCB wastes. Separate permits allow the facility to recycle fluorescent lamps and ballasts, batteries, electronic wastes, and mercury devices. The facility also manages non-PCB ballasts, phosphorous powders, aerosol cans, and mercury containing wastes. The company operates facilities in five states and is one of the nation’s largest ballast processors.

SAARLOUIS, Germany, June 12, 2013 – Ford Motor Company today began a new chapter in its vehicle manufacturing history with the start of production of the all-new Focus Electric – the first full-electric vehicle to be built by Ford in Europe – in Saarlouis, Germany.

The zero-emission Focus Electric is spearheading Ford’s line-up of electrified and highly fuel-efficient vehicles, and will be joined in Europe by the C MAX Energi plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) next year, followed by the all-new Mondeo Hybrid soon after.

Developed as a “One Ford” global vehicle, the Focus Electric features an advanced electric motor and lithium-ion battery powertrain that produces 143 PS and achieves a top speed of 136 km/h. Focus Electric has been manufactured in North America since December 2011 and the Saarlouis-built Focus Electric will reach European customers from August this year.

We are in a time of opportunity – a fruitful place where economy, environment, human rights and culture are uniting. People are starting to ask where the things they buy come from. They want to know the conditions for the workers who made their products. How it affected the environment. Is their food safe to eat? People want to know the real cost of their products and services. We are getting dangerously close to losing all relational character for money and how it is spent. Who is benefiting?

Rosa Lee Harden, co-founder and producer of Social Capital Markets (SOCAP) and HUB Bay Area, says, “Exchange of goods for services is part of how we acquire things. It is a fact of life. If we want to be moral people, we have to figure out a way to do this for good. And, make it an underlying piece in business.”

WASHINGTON, DC (June 11, 2013) – Later today, New York City Mayor Bloomberg will unveil a report he commissioned in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on the state of city’s preparedness during Hurricane Sandy and in preparation for future storms. The following is a statement from BlueGreen Alliance Executive Director David Foster:

Mayor Bloomberg is leading an important discussion on the state of the city’s infrastructure, especially as we enter another hurricane season. It is a discussion that more mayors and community leaders should have because it will better protect communities and benefit local economies. This report also builds off the important report released in January by NYS2100 that makes recommendations to improve the strength and resilience of New York State’s infrastructure and workforce needs.”

PV solution provider builds 1.2 MW grid-parity plants for public schools in New Mexico

Hamburg / Denver / Rio Rancho, 11 June 2013 – Students of the V. Sue Cleveland and Rio Rancho High Schools in Rio Rancho, New Mexico will be learning with clean solar power. This learning is made possible by the two solar power plants Conergy is currently installing on the school campuses. The two solar installations will total 1.2 megawatts. PV solution and service provider, Conergy is acting as general contractor for this project and is responsible for the planning and engineering of the project as well as for its construction and the supply of the components. Investor and plant operator is Washington Gas Energy Systems.

The two public schools will be self-consuming the generated electricity via a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Washington Gas Energy Systems. The more than 8,200 solar modules installed on 4.7 kilometers of Conergy SolarLinea mounting systems will produce around 4.3 million kilowatt hours of clean solar power every year. That is the same amount of energy as approximately 43,000 laptops running 8 hours a day for a year. When completed the installations are expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to recycling approximately 1,140 tons of waste instead of sending it to a landfill, or taking 632 passenger cars off the road for one year.

The first prize honor was decided through a vote of more than 700 members of the voluntary carbon trade.

The industry rankings recognized the pioneering achievements of Wildlife Works’ REDD+ projects in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where Wildlife Works currently manages the protection of 1.2M acres of threatened forest that generates 5M tonnes of REDD+ carbon credits on behalf of landowners and 150K people from the local communities.

REDD+, an acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation, is an essential climate change mitigation strategy envisioned by the United Nations designed to help stop the destruction of the world’s forests. The “+” represents economic alternatives that provide numerous benefits to local communities who are engaged to participate in protecting their forest for an initial period of 30 years.

The Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council marked significant progress today with the public release of the Draft Initial Comprehensive Plan: Restoring the Gulf Coast’s Ecosystem and Economy and accompanying Draft Programmatic Environmental Assessment for formal public comment. The Draft Plan provides a framework to implement a coordinated region-wide restoration effort in a way that restores, protects, and revitalizes the Gulf Coast region following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The Draft Plan establishes overarching restoration goals for the Gulf Coast region; provides details about how the Council will solicit, evaluate, and fund projects and programs for ecosystem restoration in the Gulf Coast region; outlines the process for the development, review, and approval of State Expenditure Plans; and highlights the Council’s next steps. The Council expects to release a Final Plan this summer.
