Solar panels and solar hot water systems offer a payback in as little as four years, depending on your house’s “solar readiness” and the financial incentives available. As the cost of energy continues to increase, the different home solar energy systems available allow you to gain more control over your energy expenses.

Benefits of Solar Power

Cost savings: The amount of money you save by using solar power depends on your utility costs, solar access and how you choose to pay for your investment. With time, however, a solar energy system will always pay for itself and can even increase the value of your home. When you install a solar electric, or photovoltaic (PV), system, a meter tracks the electricity it contributes to the power grid and the electricity your home uses. Most of the power produced stays in the house and never passes the utility meter. You pay only for the remainder (reduced amount) of energy your home draws from the power grid. If your system produces more power than you use, you receive energy credits.

Freight movement is among the fastest growing energy uses in the world, yet fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions standards for the heavy-duty vehicles that move freight are still in their infancy. To date, Japan, the U.S., and Canada have adopted fuel efficiency and/or greenhouse gas emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks and buses, while China, Mexico, and the European Union are considering doing so. A new ACEEE report looks at what these programs have in common, how they differ, and what the prospects are for bringing them closer together.

A massive new pipeline that will carry hydrofracked gas is being constructed in New York City. The pipeline, built by subsidiaries of Spectra Energy, will carry the gas from the Marcellus Shale, a bed that lies under Pennsylvania and New York State, into New York City’s gas infrastructure. Naturally, the construction of such a pipeline, carrying controversial highly pressurized gas, has been met with resistance.

The media is full of tweets, articles, list of ‘10 things you can do to go green now’, and other bite-size bulletins offering budget-friendly suggestions for a greener home, and thank goodness it is. We all need easy to implement, affordable, and quick solutions so that everyone has the chance to reduce energy consumption, and live a greener lifestyle, but what about when turning everything off standby and washing the car with the old dishwater isn’t enough for you anymore? What if you could do all the smaller things in your new purpose built eco-friendly home, or in a retrofit of your existing home? It’s not just a big bank balance that holds people back from large home improvement projects, but a lack of exposure to the hard facts of how a radical property overhaul and investment in certain technology could benefit them in the long run.

Local Solar Integrator CitiGreen completes 130kW roof-top installation project

Sacramento, CA, 11 March 2013 – The Sacramento International Jet Center, the Sacramento County’s airport system partner for general aviation at the Sacramento International Airport, has installed a 130 kilowatt solar electric system on their state of the art hangar and office facilities. The system was installed by CitiGreen, Inc. & Foothill Electric, turn-key solar contractors for commercial customers.

With solar, the Jet Center generates electricity from the sun and whenever the system generates more than they are using, they sell power back to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, (SMUD) at retail rates. Their system is comprised of 562 Conergy PM 235 watt solar modules affixed to the Jet Center rooftop using more than 5,600 feet of Conergy SunTop mounting systems. The entire system is connected to the grid using two Solectria 60 kilowatt inverters. This system will essentially eliminate their $31,000 annual electric bill.

The report finds that approximately 156 million pounds of fish were discarded (or thrown back overboard), likely dead or dying, from North Carolina to Maine during this period. In fact, some trawl fisheries were found to discard more than half of their catch. Additionally, NMFS indicates that no information is being collected about bycatch in more than half of the fishing fleets in this region.

“156 million pounds of bycatch in the Northeast equals jobs lost and meals wasted,” said Gib Brogan, Northeast representative at Oceana. “What is bycatch to one fishery is often targeted catch to another. Take skates for example, which are a common bycatch species in the lucrative scallop fishery. Nearly 75 percent of the 101 million pounds of skates that were caught were discarded while New England skate fishermen struggle to increase their quotas.”

One very positive outcome was the adoption of a proposal by the Maldives with regard to interim target and reference points [1], and a framework for management decisions to be taken in response to changes in stock status.

The so-called super storm swept through eight states, killing 159 people and causing $70 billion in damage.

From power outages to flooded streets, the hurricane exposed alarming weaknesses in the infrastructure of Eastern Seaboard cities. Now, Climate Central, an independent research and journalism organization based in Princeton, N.J., has added another number to that list: 11 billion gallons of sewage flowed into waterways during the storm.

The majority of overflows occurred in New York and northern New Jersey, where untreated and partially treated sewage flowed into surrounding rivers, bays, canals and, in some cases, streets, according to a recent Climate Central report.

“This record storm revealed how vulnerable the sewage and wastewater treatment system is to major coastal flooding,” says Alyson Kenward, a scientist who is the lead author of the report.

The fact that sewers overflow is no secret to city planners – and the unlucky residents who live near treatment plants. “Combined” sewer systems are common in the Northeast, Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest, and are designed to carry commercial and domestic waste and stormwater in a single pipe. During heavy rains or tidal and coastal flooding, though, the sewers’ pipes can become overwhelmed.

Fixing these combined sewer systems has been a decades-long effort. Rather than face steep fines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, cities agreed as far back as the mid-1990s to commit to long-term plans that would overhaul their network of pipes. The EPA estimates that combined sewers are used in 772 towns and cities across the country and serve 40 million people.

LONDON (May 15, 2013) – TAG Heuer, the world’s number one manufacturer of luxury timepieces inspired by sport, has signed on as Official Timekeeper, Official Watch and Chronograph and Founding Partner of the FIA Formula E Championship.

The agreement was signed at TAG Heuer’s headquarters in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland by Jean-Christophe Babin, President and CEO of TAG Heuer (on the right), and Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E Holdings.

“Teaming up with Formula E, the world’s top competition for electrically-powered racing cars represents the next logical step for TAG Heuer’s ongoing commitment to motorsports, as it draws on both our racing heritage and our commitment to sustainability,” said Jean-Christophe Babin. “An intense passion for automobiles has fuelled our technical innovation and performance since the earliest days of the brand. We patented the first dashboard chronograph in 1911, pioneered driver ambassadorship with Jo Siffert in 1969, signed on as the first ‘nontechnical’ partner of a Formula One team with Ferrari in the 70s, and continued that tradition with McLaren and its drivers from 1985 to the present day. Through these and our other partnerships - Indy 500, Audi Sports at Le Mans and World Endurance Championship and the mythical Monaco Grand Prix among them - we have pushed precision to record-breaking levels.

With new technology and environmentally-friendly engines, these 19th century attractions are more comfortable and efficient, and contribute to a greener New Hampshire.

In 1869, the first cog-driven train, “Old Peppersass” climbed Mt. Washington powered by wood-fired boilers. Three years later, the first S.S. Mount Washington cruised on Lake Winnipesaukee under steam power. Nowadays, both cruises and locomotives use new technology to provide a greener service with the same great traditions.

The Mt. Washington Cog Railway, considered a National Historic Engineering Landmark, used wood-fired boilers for the first 40 years. Around 1910, coal was introduced into the railway operation. New times brought new and advanced technology and, in 2008, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway started using biodiesel power engines, continuing the tradition of innovation and improvement that characterized the railway to the moon.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A new study suggests that overgrazing and other factors increase the severity of cheatgrass invasion in sagebrush steppe, one of North America’s most endangered ecosystems.

The research found that overgrazed land loses the mechanisms that can resist invasion. This includes degradation of once-abundant native bunchgrasses and trampling that disturbs biological soil crusts. The work was published today in the Journal of Applied Ecology by researchers from Oregon State University, Augustana College and the U.S. Geological Survey.

“We think there are ways to assess the risks these lands face to reduce the impact of cheatgrass invasion,” said Paul Doescher, professor and head of the OSU Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society, and co-author on the study.
Community with compromised resistance to invasion on flat, loamy soil located 800 meters from nearest source of water. Understory co-dominated by grazing tolerant native bunchgrasses and cheatgrass (more grazing sensitive bunchgrasses present but at low cover, <2%). Gaps are larger and more connected.

“In the future we should work cooperatively with ranchers and land managers to promote a diverse sagebrush and bunchgrass ecosystem,” Doescher said. “That type of community will protect the native plant and wildlife species and benefit sustainable rangeland use at the same time.”

With Congress about to confirm Ernie Moniz as the nation’s new energy secretary, it’s a good time to take a look back on what his predecessor, Steven Chu, accomplished with new appliance, equipment and lighting efficiency standards. In brief, he accomplished a lot. But not as much as he might have if he’d had better backing from the White House. Let’s start with the hard numbers. Taking into account products sold between now and 2035, new efficiency standards adopted during Chu’s four-year stint will net U.S. consumers and businesses more than $100 billion in savings. The energy saved by these new standards will be about enough to power the entire U.S. economy—all of our buildings, industries, homes, cars, and trucks—for about four months.

Arbuckle, California, April 16, 2013 – Conergy Projects Group has completed construction of a 725 kW photovoltaic system for T&P Farms out of Arbuckle, California. The system is powering T&P Farms’ almond hulling and shelling operations. The system is supplying T&P with 95% of the energy they use and allows T&P to offset thousands in high utility costs.

The 725 kW photovoltaic system is divided into two installations. The first installation is on the south face of the Hull Storage Barn. The second sits atop an Elevated Solar Structure – specially designed by Conergy for agricultural applications where farmers can both generate energy and store farming equipment. The two installations feature 3,024 Conergy PM 240P Watt solar modules secured to T&P Farms’ buildings using 3.9 miles of Conergy Mounting System rail. The installations, producing 1,1 million kWh annually, will prevent the release of more than 892 tons of harmful CO2 greenhouse gas per year, reduce energy consumption, and save millions in electricity costs for T&P.
